• Along a seventy-mile stretch of Mexico's Pacific shore, four towns include seemingly every stripe of simpatico beach getaway. Surfing, ecotourism, hippie chic, and luxe family all coexist—and, blessedly, without any crowds.

  • Huatulco's appeal comes not just from its location on the shores of the Pacific, but also from its weather. The area boasts 320 to 340 days of sunshine a year and an annual temperature of 28 degrees Celsius (82 F).

  • Huatulco attracts its visitors with nine bays, 36 beaches and an average year-round temperature of about 80 degrees. By offering bird-watching, coffee plantation tours, live music and Oaxacan cuisine, it is becoming a haven for those seeking a diverse yet relaxing experience.

  • Huatulco stretches 22 miles along nine bays between the Coyula and Copalita rivers. It lies about 300 miles east of Acapulo, but there are no bunched-up high-rise hotel strips to mar the scenery, just soft sands, clear ocean, striking cliffs and dense forest.

/// Hagia Sofia Eco Preserve Tour In Huatulco

/// This Huatulco Ecotour Is A Must See For Tourists

hagia sofia huatulco antorcha flower huatulco

You truly haven't experienced Huatulco until you've gone to Hagia Sofia, pronounced [Ahia Sophia]. "Slice of Heaven," "Agro-Ecological Wonderland," "A Day in Paradise" - are all comments used by past tour guests to describe this incredible local experience. This Huatulco Ecotour is sure to leave you with a humbling sense of the work that goes into maintaining this haven.

Located approximately 40 minutes into the mountains from Huatulco's core you will find this oasis. (Map to Eco Preserve found below). A guided tour takes you on an awe inducing walk through the gardens as you come in contact with over 60 varieties of organically grown floral plants, many of which are marked by staked signs for your benefit.

A man named Armando Canavati Nader began building the 130 hector ranch approximately 10 years ago, and it truly has been a labor of love. You can imagine the hard work that goes into maintaining such mass amounts of landscape. His passion is evident through the fact that Armando likely will not see any substantial profits for decades. He truly believes in the value and spirituality of this experience to the point where he refuses to see guests harassed by anyone trying to sell souvenirs or rush the experience.

Price and What it Includes:

The tour fee for this eco preserve is $65 USD a person and includes return transportation, admission, and two meals.

It begins at an outdoor kitchen located on the grounds. It is here where women native to the area make homemade breakfast and later lunch for you to enjoy. A typical meal would include quesadillas with homemade salsas and fresh fruit from the grounds (vegetarian options available).

After your delicious breakfast, a guide will take you through a winding trail stretching 500 meters along the Magdalena river. Casually walk the path as you view the more than 400 plants both native to the area and imported from Asia.

After crossing the river, you'll find yourself surrounded by tropical fruit groves; many of which you will get the opportunity to sample. You will be guided on a ten minute walk to an enchanting waterfall where guests are more than welcome to take a refreshing swim. Change rooms are provided on location.

Both the elevation and relatively dense eco system make bird watching extremely gratifying for those interested. Special guides can be arranged for avid bird watchers.

This eco preserve houses an impressive 80 different types of fruit, with 7 different types of bananas alone. Some favorites include; papaya, lychee, pineapple, and star fruit. What may be the most interesting however, are the unique fruits, mangostan and ranbustan. These tropical fruits have to be shade grown, which is easier said than done in Mexico. For this reason you will notice individual sun barriers/tents have been built to accommodate the plants needs. These plants take about 3-5 years each before the fruit can be harvested for export, making production a slow process.

Sustainable Tourism

Armando truly values the idea of sustainable tourism by making a point of providing employment for the locals. Keeping employment local is one of the best ways to insure a strong economy, as well as being one of the defining features of sustainable tourism. Another defining feature consists of having a low environmental impact. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of water to nourish all the plant life throughout the preserve. Following along with the idea of sustainability, Armando has set up massive reserves for collecting rain water that are then used for watering.
